Housing affordability remains the critical challenge for communities across the country. 2026 research from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) examines how government regulations contribute to the cost of building a new home.
According to the 2026 NAHB study:
The study identifies building code changes, builder fees, architectural standards, land requirements, exactions, and development compliance costs among the largest regulatory components – all areas of opportunity for State and Local Housing Policy to rein in shelter inflation and lower home purchase and rental costs.
NMHBA continues advocating for policies that encourage responsible growth, support attainable housing, and expand homeownership opportunities.
